Obituary

Norman Muise (Sr.) lovingly referred to as "Stormin' Norman", passed away on June 6, 2025 at the tender age of 92. One of 16 children born to Dennis and Beatrice Muise (nee AuCoin) of South Branch, he was a devoted son and brother who went on to lead an adventurous and fulfilling life.

After marrying the love of his life, Zita (nee Brake) they went on to have 12 children, whose lives were enriched every day by his stories, jokes, and creative nicknames. With tales of Sidehill Gougers, the lone christmas grape, and Rolly Poulets, he was constant entertainment for not only his children but his grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and his wide circle of friends and acquaintances.

A Big Game Warden with the Department of Wildlife for 30 years, he was well known throughout the west coast and northern peninsula of Newfoundland. An accomplished hunter and angler, he had the honour of guiding Prince Abdorreza of Iran hunting caribou in 1974 and Prince Edward, The Duke of Edinburgh, salmon fishing in 1978 during Queen Elizabeth II's Royal Visit. He received several awards during his career including an honorary award from the RCMP and the Safari International Wildlife Foundation's "Wildlife Officer of the Year".

Able to survive a helicopter crash in 1968 and countless snowmobile and ATV mishaps, which resulted in 2 brain surgeries at the age of 80, he was often referred to as a cat with nine lives. Unfortunately, six years ago he was diagnosed with dementia then two years ago he had to be placed in long term care at the Charles L. Legrow Health Center. He spent the last years of his life teasing and entertaining the nursing staff, of whom he had nothing but great things to say. We will be eternally thankful for the great care he received.

Predeceased by his daughter Ruby, who was taken from us by Cancer, he leaves behind his wife of 69 years, Zita; children Elaine (Al), Norman Jr. (Shelly), Janice (Joe), Laurel, Doris, Rob (Patsy), Lucille (Melv), Harry, Lorne (Tonya), Scott (Kathy), and Melodie (Joe). A large group of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, as well as 8 siblings. While he will be missed, the fond memories he leaves behind will far outweigh our sorrow.

In keeping with Norman's wishes he will be cremated with a private family service to follow at East Haven Funeral home, in Port aux Basques.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honour Norman by continuing with his legacy. Monetary donations can be made in Norman's name to the Alzheimer's Society, or the World Wildlife Federation. If you are not able to make a donation we ask that you make someone's day better with a funny story, a witty comeback, or a quirky nickname as our father would.
