Obituary

After a long and courageous journey with her health, Madeline passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family on April 19, 2026 at the age of 76. Through years of challenges, she showed remarkable strength, grace, and resilience. Madeline was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was the daughter of the late Bernard Payne and Violet Payne (née Lovell). She was predeceased by her sisters Bernice Billard (Clarence), Florence Billard, and infant sister Harriett; her brothers Victor and Joshua Payne; her brother-in-law James Meade (Lavena); her sisters-in-law Emma Walters (John Andrew) and Gertie Meade; and her son-in-law Wilfred Mauger Jr.

Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are her devoted husband of 58 years, Enos Meade; her sons Enos Meade (Danette) of Port aux Basques and Sheridan Meade (April) of Burlington, Ontario; and her daughter Pam Mauger (Robert Hatcher) of Isle aux Morts.

She will be dearly missed by her grandchildren Jessica Brennan (Charlie), Jonathan Mauger (Jessica), Alexandra Meade (Isaiah), Abigail Meade, and Ashton Meade; her bonus grandchildren Mike Gale (Amanda), Samantha Kelly, and Matt McKenzie (Danika); and her pride and joy great-grandchildren Jackson, Julianna, Jenna, Cassidy, Junior, and Casey, along with bonus great-grandchildren Jayden, Jared, Melanie, Miranda, Madison, and Layla.  She will also be lovingly remembered by her sisters-in-law Joyce Bunter and Ada Payne, and her brothers-in-law Wilson Billard (Norma) and Joshua Meade (Betty) plus a large circle of nieces, nephews and friends.

Madeline lived a life rooted in love, generosity, and service to her community. She was a longtime and active member of the ACW and a devoted member of the L.O.B.A, where she served as Grand Mistress of Newfoundland and Labrador and Grand Treasurer of the Crystal Chapter of Canada. Through these roles, she travelled extensively across Newfoundland, creating lasting friendships along the way. In recent years, she was also an active member of the Isle aux Morts Seniors Club. Volunteering was truly at the heart of who she was, and her contributions touched nearly every organization in her community.

She found great joy at her cabin in MacDougalls, where she spent cherished time with family especially her grandchildren and great-grand children. She loved tending to her garden and greenhouse, and nothing made her happier than having her cabin filled with laughter, good food, and the people she loved. No one ever left her table hungry. Madeline was a true pillar of her family and her community. Her loss will be deeply felt by all who knew and loved her, and her memory will be treasured always.

The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to her dedicated home care workers Wanda Spencer and Sandra Lawrence who provided exceptional care and compassion over the past year and a half. The family would also like to thank Dr. Blecher and Paula and the nurses of acute care who have shown her so much compassion over the last number of years.

Friends and family are welcome to visit Holy Spirit Church, Isle aux morts, NL on Wednesday, April 22nd, 2026, from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. Funeral service will be held Thursday, April 23rd 2026 @ 11:00 a.m. at Holy Spirit officiated by Rev. Annie Rose with burial to follow at Hillside Haven Cemetery Route 470.
