Llewellyn
Munden
Jul 28, 1936 — Nov 20, 2025
Burnt Islands
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Lewellyn Munden announce his passing at the age of 89. Lew was the beloved son of the late John and Stella Munden and was predeceased by his wife Ella Munden (nee Janes). He is also reunited with his sisters, nephews, and extended family members.
Left to mourn with fond and loving memories are his sons, Michael and Sam (Marion), devoted partner of 13 years, Elsie, grandchildren Samantha, Nathan and Haley Rae, sisters Viola and Dorothy, along with a large circle of nieces and nephews. He will be dearly missed by his extended family, Karen (Clyde), Kelly (Warren), and Kathy (Max), who welcomed Lew into their family, hearts and homes.
Lew or 'Mr Munden' as he was still known to many, long after they had been one of his students, was ever the consummate teacher. Shaping young minds between Hatchet Cove, Trinity Bay, Robinsons, Port aux Basques and finally finishing his career in his home town of Burnt Islands, where he grew up.
Even following his retirement, his teaching ways continued. Many years were spent researching, collecting bits and bobs of local history of Burnt Islands, its people and the southwest coast in general - preserving its history for the current generation and those still yet to come. Fruits of his labour can be seen at the Hook and Line Interpretation Centre in Burnt Islands. His research led to an increasing interest in genealogy. He assisted many folks locally, throughout Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom, trace their family trees all the way down to their very roots. All without even having as much as an email address. He often cited, "... to know who you are, you have to know where you came from..." Following the news of his passing, it was commented, "another local legend is gone"
"What we once enjoyed and deeply loved, we can never lose, for all that we love deeply becomes part of us."
-Helen Keller
