Port aux Basaques

Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Lillian Marie Muise announce her peaceful passing at the Dr. Charles L. LeGrow Health Centre, Port aux Basques, NL, on March 29, 2026, at the age of 91.

Born in Port Dufferin, Nova Scotia, Lillian was the daughter of the late Winslow and Sheila Barkhouse. She was also predeceased by her loving husband of 60 years, Peter Muise; infant children Barbara, Randy, and Teddy; infant sister Linda; brothers, Harold (Ida) and Albert (Theresa); sisters-in-law Gladys, Mary-Ann, Muriel; and brother-in-law Jerome Muise.

Lillian leaves to mourn with fond and precious memories her children, Rick, Ron (Brenda), Bonnie (Denis), and Corey (Natasha); seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She will also be dearly missed by her siblings Cyril, Betty, Wilson, David, Tex (Judy), Phillip (Twyla), Dale (Wayne), Laurie (Heather), and Darlene (John), along with a large circle of nieces, nephews, and in-laws.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Dr. Charles L. LeGrow Health Centre, especially Nurse Jane Caines, for their compassion and care. A special thank you is also extended to Colleen St. Croix, her dedicated home care worker, for her years of kindness and support.

Lillian lived a long and active life, always ready for a game of cards and never one to pass up a chance to play bingo. She was a proud member of her local card club for many years, and during her marriage, she and Peter shared a daily game of crib at lunchtime, keeping a friendly tally of their wins. Lillian adored her family and friends and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Up until just a few years ago, she was known for making the best homemade bread and baked beans, and she had a special fondness for sweets—her cookie jar was never empty, whether filled with store-bought treats or her own baking. Lillian also had her charming superstitions; no one was allowed to wash clothes on Good Friday or New Year's Day—no matter what! Together with her husband, she loved to travel, especially to England for the 40th anniversary of the disaster of the HMCS Kootenay on which her husband served. She also made trips to Germany and France, with a special memory of visiting Beaumont-Hamel as well as several trips to Florida and western Canada.

In keeping with Lillian's wishes cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held Thursday April 2nd, 2026 @ 1:00 p.m. at St.Sylvester's Church, South Branch, officiated by Father Prakash with burial to take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Lillian's memory can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Cancer Society. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to East Haven Funeral Home, 57 Grand Bay Road, (695-2300).
