Listen to Obituary

It is with profound sadness that the family of the late Joyce Young (nee Short) announce her peaceful passing with family by her side at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital, Corner Brook, NL on October 25th, 2026. at the age of 74 years.

Joyce was the daughter of the late John Thomas and Emily Maude Short of Port aux Basques, NL. She was also predeceased by her parents in-law, Matthew Sr. and Ethel Young; brothers and sisters, Isaac Short, Elsie (William) McNeil, Clifford Gaulton; brothers and sisters-in-law; Margaret Gaulton, John Murphy, George Osmond, Larry Kempton, Julie Short and Jerry Patrey.

Leaving to mourn with fond memories, her loving husband of 56 years Matthew (Junior) Young; daughters, Tracy (Steve) Drover and Nadine (Colin) Butler; precious grandsons, Nicholas and Cody. She will be dearly missed by her siblings, Joan (Bert) LeRiche, Shirley White, Norma Murphy, Julie Kempton, Lew (Lynn) Short, Nelson Kettle, Doreen (Ernest) Dowding, Maisie Osmond, Viola (Jordan Elms), Rena Short, and Norman Short, Brothers and Sisters in law: Howard Young (Josie), Sharon Melbourne, Linda Wagg (Harry), Donna Tapp (Bob), Joanne Brumwell, Margaret Young, Jocelyn Young, Beth McNeil (Jim), plus a large circle of nieces, nephews, friends, and extended family.

Joyce was truly one of a kind, a lady whose kindness, warmth, and spirited personality left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her. For many years, she was a familiar and welcoming face as secretary at the local high school. To generations of students, staff, and visitors who passed through those doors, Joyce was so much more than the lady behind the desk- she ruled the roost! She was a friendly smile, a helping hand, and someone who always had time for others. A real firecracker with a heart of gold, she had a wonderful way of making people feel welcome, valued, and cared for.

Outside of her working years, Joyce found happiness in life's simple pleasures. She enjoyed exercising, especially her walks, a good game of cards with friends, watching her grandchildren play hockey and spending time in the kitchen preparing delicious desserts. She was known for generously sharing her homemade treats and meals with others. It was these thoughtful gestures, done without expecting anything in return, that spoke volumes about the kind of woman she was. Above all else, Joyce’s greatest pride was her family, she and her loving husband were two peas in a pod, and when you saw one you saw the other. They shared so many wonderful adventures together and supported each other during health challenges. Joyce talked endlessly about her daughters and precious grandchildren. She was very proud of their accomplishments. Nothing meant more to her than those she loved, and the love she had for them was at the very heart of who she was.
