Obituary

Joseph (Joe) Gerard Martin, 80, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away surrounded by loved ones in the comfort of his home in Codroy Valley early in the morning of August 15, 2026. A man of calloused hands and a loving heart, Joe lived his life with quiet determination and a deep love and dedication to his family.

Born April 2nd, 1946 in Codroy Valley, NL, to William and Ann T. Martin, Joe was raised with a profound respect for a hard day's work and the importance of putting family first. He married his lifelong partner, Anne M. Martin, on September 6, 1969 and together they spent over 40 years running their family businesses. A man of many talents, he worked as a business owner, mechanic, heavy equipment operator, and snow plow operator.

Joe found his greatest peace with a power saw in hand and some quiet moments in the woods. He appreciated a good game of cards and a quick waltz. He was known to close friends and family for his quick, dry wit and the twinkle in his eye as he played his many tricks. He didn't need the spotlight, he was happy to sit back and quietly enjoy time with family and friends around him. His greatest pride was seeing his children and grandchildren build stable, honest lives.

He leaves to mourn his wife, Anne; children, Carl (Michelle), Dale (Robert), Brent (Patricia), Michael (Deanna), Joanne (Trevor); grandchildren, Blake, Jarod, Devon, Joey, Landen, Rachel, Heidi, Nicholas, Cohen, Grant, Gerard, Joseph and Amelia; close friend, Hughie MacIsaac, and his wide circle of extended family members and friends. He is predeceased by his parents, William T. and Ann T. Martin; parents-in-law, Jerome and Rosemary Downey; father figure, Peter Lemoine; siblings, Rita White, Gerard Martin and William(Bill) Martin; and great-grandson, Dean Lucas Rousseau-Martin.

The family would like to thank all of those who helped with Joe’s care throughout his illness, including but not limited to, Dr. David Blecher, Amy Taylor, Gloria Chaulk, and all of the dedicated staff at the Charles L. LeGrow Health Centre, Western Memorial Regional Hospital, St John’s Health Science Centre, and the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate the life of Joe Martin at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, Upper Ferry, on Monday August 17th from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, August 18th, 2026 at 11:00 am, officated by  Father Maurice O'Quinn, assisted by Father Parkash.  Burial to follow at Mt. St. Thomas Cemetery, Codroy Valley.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the charity of your choosing.
