Joan Keeping
Wilson
Dec 14, 1939 — Jul 27, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, Joan Dolina Keeping Wilson on Saturday July 27th, 2024 at the age of 84.
She was predeceased by her youngest son George A. Wilson, parents Maxwell C. and Mary Maude "Mollie" (Meaney) Keeping, and partner Abram (Abe) Currie.
Mourning her loss are children; Nancy Hawkins (Dale), Lynne Wilson, William Wilson (Trudy), and Kristina George (Kirk), as well as her four precious honey bunnies, granddaughters Joanna Lucas (Stéphane Brunet), Lauren Wilson, Mollie Wilson (Jacob Pitcher), and grandson Joshua George (Michelle Perry).
'Joanie Caponie' will also be missed by her Parsons family, Donna (Sam Rose), Kris (Melanie), Andrew (Erin) and Adam (Amanda), and her Labrador family, Pauline Woodman (Dave), Mike Currie (Marilyn), and their families. She will also be remembered with much love by a very large circle of extended family and friends in Port aux Basques, North Sydney, Labrador City and St. John's.
Born in Cape Breton, NS, Mom spent most of her life in Port aux Basques. She truly loved the community, volunteering and supporting many causes over the years. She enjoyed her career as a Tourism Information Officer with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador's Visitor Information Centre, often joking that she got paid to tell people where to go, and how to get there.
Mom was a force and a fierce advocate, particularly for women. She was one of the founding members of the Gateway Status of Women Council, sat on the Provincial Advisory Council for the Status of Women, and was a representative on the former Western Health and Community Services Board. An entertainer, she loved to act, play guitar and sing. Many of those reading her obituary will recall hearing her beautiful voice at a wedding, get together or public event.
Mom spent her final years, first at Heritage Square Retirement Living in Conception Bay South, where she had many friends and was adored by staff, before moving to the Agnes Pratt Home in St. John's. We thank staff at both facilities for the friendship and exceptional care provided to her.
As per her wishes, cremation has occurred. Visitation will take place at East Haven Funeral Home in Port aux Basques on Monday August 5th from 2- 4 pm. A Celebration of Life, officiated by Rev. George Critchell, will take place on Tuesday August 6th at East Haven Funeral Home at 2 PM, followed by internment at St. Andrew's Cemetery, Codroy Valley officiated by Father Prakash.
Mom was a huge animal lover. In lieu of flowers, if you are able, we ask that you donate in her memory to an animal rescue organization of your choice or the Canadian Diabetes Association, Newfoundland and Labrador chapter.
