Betty L
Horwood
Aug 28, 1937 — Aug 25, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that the family of the late Betty Lillian Horwood announces her passing at her home in Lewisporte on August 25, 2024 at the age of 86 while holding the hands of both her daughters.
Betty was born in Port aux Basques to parents Wallace and Dora (nee Keeping) Hill on August 28, 1937. She grew up there and started working as a telephone operator. Her work involved literally connecting people from around the world. The most important call was from Ernest Lloyd Horwood who was working as a technician on the station in Mouse Island. They were married on July 12, 1955.
Betty worked hard to support her husband as they moved multiple times during their marriage to stations including the remote White Point (Battle Harbour), Bonavista and Comfort Cove/Lewisporte.
She delivered her firstborn Marilyn in Mary's Harbour after travelling to the clinic by dogsled. Her second child Larry came along in 1959. She home schooled Marilyn and Larry during the time in Labrador.
Her third child, Karen, came as a surprise years later and lead her to be very involved in figure skating, devoting many volunteer hours to the Notre Dame Figure Skating Club. Betty was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who never forgot her families' special occasions well in advance.
She was well known for her cooking, with it being impossible to leave our home without a meal or to interfere with her kitchen operations or meal plans. Your job was to come to the table when called. When not in the kitchen, she loved being outdoors and enjoyed many years of camping especially their trips to Codroy Valley in the summers to be with her family, walking around Woolfrey's Pond and ice fishing with her husband. She enjoyed knitting sweaters for all family members.
Betty has been described as a strong fighter, surviving many losses including her mother when she was only 1 year of age, Larry when he was only 15 through drowning and then her husband Lloyd in March of 2020. She outlived multiple prognoses for multiple cancers and faced each surgery, investigation and treatment with dignity and hope.
Betty was predeceased by her sisters Bertha, Elsie, Annie, Gertie and brother John Wallace Hill.
Leaving to mourn are her daughters, Marilyn Feltham and Karen Horwood (Richard Lewis). Grandchildren, Stephen Feltham (Meegan), Trudy Rosman (Paul), Matthew Lewis and Samantha Lewis. Great grandchildren, Kaedan and Theo Rosman as well as many nieces, nephews and in-laws.
We would like to thank special neighbours Tony and Marilyn Pearce, Fred Sheppard, the nurses in the chemo unit in Grand Falls Windsor who always admired her outfits through her years of treatments and brightened her days, her family doctor, Dr. Susan Campbell and oncologist, Dr. Joanne Hickey, Gordan Woolfrey's/East Haven Funeral Homes for their help honoring Betty's wishes and Joan Chaisson for her services.
Visitation will be held August 28, 2024 from 6-8 pm at East Haven Funeral Home. There will be a private family graveside service on August 29, 2024 at 2 pm at Wesley United Cemetery, TCH, officiated by Joan Chaisson. If you wish to honor her memory, please consider the Canadian Blood Services, "The gift of blood is the gift of life". Funeral arrangements in the care of East Haven Funeral Home Inc, 57 Grand Bay Road, Port aux Basques, 695-2300. www.easthavenfuneralhome.com
